"Man is the cruelest animal," wrote the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche shortly before he, according to legend, descended into the abyss of madness. It is said that the sight of a draft horse collapsing under the whip of its driver was the final straw that broke him.
Around the same time, the Danish literary critic and aesthetician Georg Brandes fired the starting shot for Nietzsche’s international breakthrough, which would make him one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. No philosopher, dead or alive, quite matches the fascination that surrounds Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900). It’s difficult to attribute his popularity to a single cause. Rather, it seems to be a perfect storm that has shaped the image of Nietzsche as philosophy’s romantic and mad enfant terrible.
Anna Laurine Kornum’s graphic novel My Friend Nietzsche dives into the myth of Nietzsche’s breakdown and his friendship with Georg Brandes. With great empathy, Kornum explores the relationship between humans and animals, genius and madness, and how vulnerability and suffering connect all sentient beings.
"The myth of Nietzsche’s encounter with the horse is at once mysterious, tragic, and symbolic. It fascinates me because it almost stands as a confrontation between the philosopher—who in his works rejected pity—and the animal, which throughout its life silently bore the burdens of humanity," says Anna Laurine Kornum.
